About Ye Laoshi
Welcome! I am happy that you have chosen to learn Chinese with me. I have been teaching Chinese for many years, including in Thailand and the United States. I have taught students in Middle School, High School, and College. I have also been tutoring students of all ages for many years. I have a Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese from Brandeis University.
In my years of teaching, I have seen many students who have taken Chinese classes for many years, who know a lot of vocabulary and grammar, but have poor pronunciation, which makes their Chinese very difficult to understand. It is a shame that all the effort and time that they put into learning Chinese was wasted because they didn't realize the importance of learning the Chinese tones the right way. And the more they practice the wrong tones, the harder it is to correct them. For that reason, I strongly suggest you to start your Chinese language journey off on the right foot by taking my Chinese Pronunciation classes.
In Chinese, there are five tones that are used when speaking. These tones determine the meaning of the word. The same word can have different meanings depending on the tone. For example, mā with the first tone means mom, má with the second tone means fiber, mǎ with the third tone means horse, mà with the fourth tone means scold, ma without a tone mark is seen as a question mark.
I created this website in order to help Chinese learners start their journey of learning Chinese the right way. With one-one-one instruction, I will make sure that you learn to correctly pronounce each word. I strongly suggest that anyone who has decided to learn Chinese take my online one-on-one Chinese pronunciation class.
